Statement of significance
This fine example of an 1830s house illustrates the development of the town and architectural fashion in St Helier in the early 19th century.
Context
n/a
External Description
The grand exterior of the house still largely survives with a stucco façade incorporating full length pilasters surmounted by a projecting moulded cornice with lion mask and acanthus decoration in a vaguely Empire style. There is a hipped roof of Welsh slate masked by a parapet, and an unusual fenestration arrangement with large Venetian windows at first floor (known locally as 'Guernsey windows'). The 20th century extensions and additions to the front and north of the 1830s house are of no interest and are excluded from the listing.
Internal Description
The interior has a substantial survival of high quality features including a fine mahogany staircase, unusual 7-panelled doors and matching joinery throughout the house, windows with panelled lining, and bedroom fireplaces. Part of the ground floor and the entrance wing have been lost.
