Listed building or place reference: HE0738 Historic site reference Property The Harvest Barn (Le Moulin Nicolle) Road name La Vallee des Vaux Parish St. Helier LocationView on map Grade Listed Building Grade 2 Category Industrial building Statement of significance Although altered, this remains a rare surviving example of a medieval watermill (one of only a handful in Jersey surviving in recognisable form). One of only two examples (with Moulin de Lecq) retaining a late medieval fireplace. Unique example of a watermill retaining a late mediaeval arch - all other mills having lost this feature at least by the onset of photography. Later additions to the property relating to its conversion to a public house are not of interest. Context n/a External Description Detached, 3 storey, 4 bay. Front (west) elevation: modern cement-tile roof with modern box dormers. Stone built (now painted). 2 entrance doors, one a modern rustic-style timber door within a traditional stone arch, the other a leaded glazed pair of doors within a stone opening with straight topped lintel. All windows are rustic leaded casements within stone openings, upper lintels and cills appear to be replacements. The heavily chamfered arched doorway with acorn-stop? has ten stones, one more than is normal, and is somewhat flattened and with rather mean shoulders, suggesting a C16 date. The outline of the blocked windows (with brick openings) of a 3rd storey, is discernible just below the eaves. Abutting and projecting forward on the north gable is a gable buttress, built to combat the effects of the constant vibration of the wheel. Above is an C18 granite kneeler, marking the earlier roof level before the additional storey, giving us an approximate date for the (now blocked) windows of around 1800. Side (north) elevation: half visible due to subterranean store room in wheel-pit. Painted stone gable wall, with a blocked axil and maintenance opening and to rear of the axil is an inspection hole. A gable kneeler in the rear angle matches its twin on the front angle. Side (south) and rear (north) elevations are obscured by modern additions, only the south/rear, stone qouins are just visible. Internal Description Ground plan, single pile. The interior appears to have lost all original floors and timber work so it is impossible to know of the original internal arrangements. All that survives is some stone corbels, that may or may not be original, and the C16 stone fireplace (one of only two such late mediaeval fireplaces still extant and in a mill context). It has mediaeval uprights, chamfered on the inside only, with acorn-stops; its hearth, having been raised, now obscures the lower stops; replacement C18 corbels with step-moulds and massive mediaeval stone lintel cut to fit joggle stones, which have disappeared, presumably along with the original corbels to set the hood further back, thus rationalising space This gives us a modification date of C18.
