The building, which presents itself to the roadside, is an expression of the age of the car, taking advantage of the steep and narrow site on a busy road. Internally, in the chapel, there is a good play of light with the added significance of the use of the Harry Clark stained glass windows. The weaker aspects to the composition are the rear wings, in particular the west wing which does not integrate so well to the main chapel building. Context n/a External Description Detached two storey, 5 bay building. The main wedge-shaped mass of the chapel has three structural bays fronting on the pavement line with canted bays at each end returning back, with increasing height, toward the wings. First floor sits on piloti, the ground floor is open allowing vehicular access through the second bay of columns, on the first floor circular 'oriel' windows project from the canted corners. Front (north) elevation: pitched roof of concrete tiles behind parapet. Walls to first floor are dark brown stretcher bond brick, central crucifix; the structural floor is expressed in exposed concrete; ground floor has round concrete columns to central bays, oblong corner columns above which sit 'oriel' windows of finned concrete with slit windows between. The central ground floor bay houses a glazed entrance screen, the flanking bays have geometric metal open screens. The slope of the road is levelled by a rubble stone plinth. The canted bay projects on the first floor beyond the structural columns, with paired lancet windows topped by a central round window, all with stained glass. Side (east) elevation: the apex of the canted bay is defined by vertical concrete ribs, flanking a narrow slit window, topped with a concrete cross. Side (west) elevation: the canted bay matches the east elevation. The SW rear wing has a mansard roof with six single pane windows lined up with six double pane windows, with infill panels below the cills, on the first floor; cantilevered concrete stair gives access to the first floor. Internal Description The vehicular way under the building gives access to the main entrance hall on the south side and a shop on the north side (also accessed from the street). The underside of the coffered concrete first floor is exposed in the vehicular areas. Both entrances are glazed screens with double doors. A curving stairwell, with a domed ceiling, rises against the back wall of the entrance hall to the chapel on the first floor; the stair has metal balusters and handrail; the ceiling is of exposed timber. A secondary chapel opens off the main space to the southeast, a recessed balcony over the entrance door. The oriel windows gives bright light either side of the altar, while the lancet stained glass windows and the adjacent tall slit windows give a subtle light to the edge of the space. The ceiling is t&g boarding between an exposed diamond frame of structural timber beams. The walls are plastered. The first floor landing gives access to ancillary rooms to the east and the accommodation wing to the west.
