The northern breakwater ranks as one of the Island's greatest architectural and engineering achievements. Context n/a External Description The northern (St Catherine's) breakwater is ½ mile long; founded on a tipped rubble mound and consisting of two coursed masonry retaining walls with rock filling. The main walling in constructed in blocks of local conglomerate - up to 15 tons in weight - dry jointed and laid in courses of random height. The coping stones are granite and the surfacing is partially of granite setts. Granite is also used for the rear parapet wall and for the central wall between the quay and upper walkway - both set in mortar. There is a substantial slipway on the landward south side. The area of the listing encompasses the 19th century breakwater - including the sections that wrap around the base of Verclut Point as shown.
