Listed building or place reference: MY0036 Historic site reference Property Greve de Lecq Barracks Road name Le Mont de St. Marie Parish St. Mary LocationView on map Grade Listed Building Grade 1 Category Anglo-Jersey military structure Statement of significance Grève de Lecq is the best-preserved representative of the purpose-built barracks that were constructed as part of General Don's island-wide military infrastructure in the early 19th century. They form part of a fine ensemble of period fortifications that defend the bay. Context n/a External Description The barracks, constructed between 1810-1815, are built in the Board of Ordnance's elegant 'utilitarian Regency' style, with low-pitched, hipped roofs and wide eight-over-eight sash windows. Some of the building materials were imported including slates from Wales and limestone cills, probably from Dorset. The barracks comprises single-storey dormitory blocks which housed the soldiers, with smaller separate rooms for the NCOs; and a separate block for the Officers. The site also includes an ablutions block, stable and harness rooms, prison cells and various storage buildings with a parade ground.
