Statement of significance
A house of early origins, thought to be pre-Reformation, retaining historic character and some rare and distinctive stonework, contributing to the rural setting.
Context
n/a
External Description
House (2 storey, 6 irregular bays). Converted outbuilding to west running north not of interest. House (south) elevation: slate roof, rendered chimneys. Walls mixed random rubble, coursed rubble and squared stone with ashlar quoins to windows, all of which have been heightened. Irregular fenestration pattern. Those with chamfered surrounds are unusually large, the chamfers are lightly moulded. Windows replacements. Stone arched doorway in second bay. Evidence of a tourelle in two adjacent chamfered doorways in the north wall and remnants of a doorway above them on the first floor.
Internal Description
Published research records ground floor east fireplace with deeply moulded corbels and concave-convex chamfering on the uprights. First floor west, fireplace with corbels and lintel missing but the uprights have chamfers with chamfer stops. Three doorways in the north wall have chamfers. J Stevens states that the house is probably unique in having 6 chamfer stops in the form of a cross, indicating an early, pre-Reformation, date.
