External Description
Single storey, 3-bay white-washed rubble granite with steep stone vaulted roof (NTFJ report that the present vault appears to have flat metal strengthening bars inside and it is possible that it is partly made of concrete). The granite chimneystack – now lost – was likely original to the guard house as other examples are known – the building probably split internally between a guard room (with fireplace) and a store room. The principal south front has an original central doorway flanked by pair of square window openings – the right-hand opening also being original. Photographic evidence shows that the left-hand window opening was inserted at a later date. The north facing wall has single small opening with partly brick dressings. The west gable (facing the sea) has a large square window opening inserted in the C20. There is a small ventilation slot in the apex. There is a C19 rubble granite extension to the east gable (with WWII German concrete ceiling). This is shown in a dilapidated condition on the pre-1884 photograph. The fragments of walls extending from the west gable appear to be early C20 (pre-1939) – perhaps constructed to shelter the exposed west window or to define an outside space for leisure use.
