Listed building or place reference: TR0160 Historic site reference Property Rozel Harbour Road name La Brecque du Sud Parish St. Martin LocationView on map Grade Listed Building Grade 1 Category Maritime structure Statement of significance Jersey has a long maritime history and the most significant buildings that illustrate those seafaring traditions are of public and heritage importance. One of the most characteristic features of maritime Jersey is its small historic harbours, which as a group are potentially of more than island wide importance. The harbours also rank as some of the Island's greatest architectural and engineering achievements. Good example of German WWII personnel shelter with unusual tank turret position integrated. Context n/a External Description Rozel Harbour has a single shelter arm constructed from random coursed, rough dressed, dry jointed stone masonry - utilising the local hard conglomerate (puddingstone) - with a parapet wall on its seaward side. The arm is founded on rock, the lower part of the head formed by dressing the bedrock in situ. The German occupying forces added a personnel shelter and Tobruk position for tank turret at the end of the shelter arm in the 1940s. The area of the designation encompasses the stone pier and other associated 19th century structures that contribute to the significance and character of the tidal fishing harbour, including the granite seawall that forms the landward side along La Brecque du Nord, the slipway on the west side of the harbour, German WWII defences; and the outcrop Le Main Rotchi on the south-east side of the harbour with its traditional brick-lined viviers cut into the rock. The area of tidal harbour enclosed within the harbour structures is also significant because of its associated historical importance and integral value to the character and setting of the harbour.
