Flu treatment (including antiviral medicines)

What medical treatment will I be given if I have flu?

If you develop flu you may be prescribed oseltamavir (Tamiflu) by your GP. If you are given Tamiflu, it’s important you finish the course of capsules.

Is Tamiflu safe?

Tamiflu is safe. At least 50 million doses have been used around the world with very few problems. The UK Department of Health and the Health Protection Agency continue to advise using Tamiflu to treat flu.

How does Tamiflu work?

Tamiflu is not a cure but it will help to:

  • reduce the severity of the illness
  • help prevent the virus from spreading

How will I get it if I need it?

People with symptoms will be assessed by their GP and antiviral medication will be prescribed if needed.
