Ministers meet with Chinese Ambassador

08 June 2011

The Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, and Assistant Chief Minister, International and UK Relations, Senator Freddie Cohen, met with the Chinese Ambassador in London today (8 June).

The meeting with His Excellency Liu Xiaoming comes in advance of next week’s delegation visit to China, when both Ministers will attend meetings in Beijing; the Chief Minister will then go on to Shanghai for further appointments. During today’s meeting with the Ambassador, Senators Le Sueur and Cohen discussed commercial prospects and diplomatic links in Beijing and Shanghai. They also discussed the delegation’s itinerary for China, which includes meetings with government and key representatives from the finance and business sectors.

Senator Le Sueur said: ”We are pleased to have benefited from His Excellency Liu Xiaoming’s expertise in advance of our trip. China is the world’s fastest growing major economy and it is important for the future of the Island that we continue to strengthen our commercial and diplomatic ties both with its government and with Chinese financial and business leaders.”

Senator Cohen added: “We also took the opportunity to discuss with Ambassador Liu Xiaoming the significant historic ties that exist between Jersey and China. In keeping with this, we presented him with a gift of commemorative stamps depicting the extraordinary achievements of Jersey woman Lillian Grandin, who travelled to China in the 19th century to establish medical facilities in some of the country’s remotest regions.”

The delegation, which arrives in China on 13 June and leaves on 16 June, also includes the Chief Executive of Jersey Finance Limited.
