Get out, stay out fire warning

08 July 2013

The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service has reminded home owners to close the door on a fire and get out of their property after attending a fire in St Brelade at the weekend.

Firefighters dealt with the blaze on Sunday evening, which had spread from the kitchen to the roof of the property. Paramedics treated the owner of the house for smoke inhalation after he tried to tackle the blaze.

Watch Commander Larry Vibert said "In the event of a fire in the home we would always recommend that people shut the door of the room on fire, leave the property and call the Fire and Rescue Service.

"Although trying to tackle the fire may seem like a good idea, many injuries are sustained trying to do so. Immediately closing the door to the room on fire will reduce the chance of fire and smoke spreading through the rest of the property. Remember, get out, stay out and call 999."

Fire crews remained at the house for more than three hours carrying out salvage operations and undertaking an investigation into the cause of the fire which is most likely to have started in the fridge/freezer in the kitchen.
