Price Comparison Report June 2013

The Price Comparison Report examines the rate at which prices have changed by looking at the behaviour of the groups and sections that constitute the Retail Prices Index in each jurisdiction. Additionally, direct comparisons of prices are made where possible in order to give an indication of relative price levels.
 

The latest report shows that in June 2013:

  • the overall increase of the RPI over the eight-year period from 2005 to 2013 has been similar in Jersey (27%), Guernsey (26%) and the UK (30%)
  • during the twelve months to June 2013 the RPI increased by 1.5% in Jersey, by 2.7% in Guernsey and by 3.3% in the UK
  • underlying inflation in June 2013, as measured by the annual change in RPI(Y)  was lower in Jersey (1.4%) than in both Guernsey (1.9%) and the UK (3.4%)
  • direct food price comparisons show that fresh fruit was about two-fifths more expensive in Jersey than in the UK, fresh vegetables were almost a third more expensive in Jersey than in the UK, meat was on average a sixth more expensive in Jersey than in the UK
  • the mean retail price of alcohol was higher in Jersey than in the UK: by 41 p for a pint of beer; by 49 p for a pint of lager; and by 35 p for a nip of whisky
  • the mean retail price of cigarettes was lower in Jersey than in the UK, by 97 p for a packet of 20 cigarettes
  • the mean retail price of unleaded petrol and diesel was lower in Jersey than in the UK, by 11 p and 14 p per litre, respectively
  • in June 2013 the pre-tax prices of alcohol, tobacco and motor fuels were higher in Jersey than in the UK
