Charity runway cycle ride

06 March 2013

Jersey Airport is offering 60 people in Jersey the chance to take part in a charity cycle ride along the runway to raise money for Jersey Cheshire Home.

The ‘Runway Cycle Ride’, which is open to anyone over the age of nine with a roadworthy bike and helmet, will take place on the 1,706 metre runway early in the morning on Sunday 24 March 2013. The event is limited to 60 participants and available on a first-come basis.

Cyclists will be asked to donate £30 to take part. They will cycle as a group along a specially marked route for around half an hour. Children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Charity celebrates 30th anniversary

The event has been organised by Air Traffic Control Officer Lindsay Neil in support of Jersey Cheshire Home which is celebrating 30 years in the Island this year. Mr Neil says "I wanted to do something a little bit different to help raise funds for this worthwhile cause. Jersey Airport last hosted a sponsored runway cycle ride in 2009, which was very successful so I thought we’d try it again. Things like this do not happen every often and staging such an event is no easy task. I am therefore grateful for the support and assistance offered by management and colleagues at Jersey Airport for making this happen."

David Lord from Jersey Cheshire Home says "The purpose of the charity cycle ride is to make Islanders disability-aware while having some fun and raising some money along the way. We are hopeful that families, friends and individuals will embrace this unusual one-off event."

The cycle ride will take place early on a Sunday morning to cause the least disruption to the airport. In the event of bad weather, the cycle ride will be rescheduled for a later date.

To register please visit the Jersey Cheshire Home website or telephone (01534) 285858 Ext. 1 (between 9am and 3pm).
