Code of practice for official statistics

21 May 2015

The Council of Ministers is presenting a new code of practice for official statistics.

The code has been created by the independent Statistics User Group, which is made up of members of the public. The aim is to explain in a single document how official statistics in Jersey work.

Independent

The Council of Ministers wishes to support the Statistics User Group in emphasising the fact that the production of official statistics is wholly independent of government business.

The Council of Ministers believes that Jersey receives excellent official statistics, which allow for good governance and informed decisions, as well as providing important, accurate information to the public. The Council of Ministers is committed to continuing to support the statistical function.

High quality information

The Assistant Chief Minister, Senator Paul Routier, said “High quality information on the state of our economy, housing, employment, health and public attitudes is essential. This code will show how official statistics work, and how much we value them.”

The Chief Statistician, Duncan Gibaut, added “The Statistics Unit strives to produce valuable statistics, which are wholly independent from the political process. This is right and proper, and I am pleased that the Council of Ministers is putting this code forward, endorsing these principles.”
