CRESS scheme extended

30 June 2020

The Minister for Social Security has agreed a two-month extension to the COVID-19 Related Emergency Support Scheme (CRESS). The scheme supports Islanders who have been working in Jersey for less than five years and who have lost their full-time employment because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CRESS was launched on 1 April to provide weekly payments to cover basic costs, depending on the individual’s relationship status and whether they have children. On 21 June, there were 200 weekly active CRESS claims, which supported 240 adults and 30 children.

Minister for Social Security, Deputy Judy Martin, said: “Although Jersey’s usual approach is that people need to live in Jersey for five years before they can claim Income Support, the last few months have been far from usual. CRESS was introduced to support workers in recognition of the extraordinary situation they faced in Jersey.

“The opening up of travel routes and the relaxation of health controls has now made it easier for migrants to return home or to find employment in Jersey. The original need for CRESS will reduce, and the extra two months’ extension gives workers time to make plans.”

For people who have worked in Jersey for at least six months, a single person receives £150 a week, and a couple who have both lost their employment income receive £250 a week. Those who have worked in Jersey for less than six months can claim £70 per person per week. A payment of £50 per child is also available.

Minister for Treasury and Resources, Deputy Susie Pinel, said: “I’m pleased to support this extension to the CRESS scheme. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government has offered an unprecedented level of support to Islanders. This includes workers who have been unable to work and unable to return home.”

Minister for Economic Development, Senator Lyndon Farnham, said: “CRESS has been a key part of our overall support for businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Registered workers are vital to several of the Island’s key industries, including hospitality and agriculture: supporting these workers means that these businesses have the capacity to return to regular operation as soon as possible.”

To apply for help through the COVID-19 Related Emergency Support Scheme (CRESS), email CRESS@gov.je or call (01534) 444444. New applications to CRESS will not be accepted after the end of July.
