Chief Statistician appointed

22 December 2021

The Government has appointed Ian Cope as the Island's permanent Chief Statistician.

Mr Cope has been Acting Chief Statistician since January and has now taken on the role permanently after being successful in the recruitment process.

Mr Cope has previously worked for the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) for 29 years and has provided consultancy support to censuses in New Zealand, Albania, and Pacific Islands.

His line of work at the ONS has included leading operational aspects on the 2011 census which subsequently won a UK Government award. During his time with Statistics Jersey, he has overseen the 2021 census and is looking forward to seeing the results of this project.

Chief Statistician, Ian Cope, said: "I am delighted to have been permanently appointed in this important role and I look forward to working more closely with my team, others in the Government, and with users of statistics."

"I am excited to get further into Statistics Jersey as I strongly believe that what we do enables others to make decisions to make their lives better. I hope that planned new legislation, if it is passed, will give Islanders increased confidence in the full range of important statistics produced by analysts in government."

Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré, said: "Ian Cope brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience to support Statistics Jersey, and I would like to offer my congratulations and wish him success in the role."

The process was overseen by the Jersey Appointments Commission and recruitment was managed by the Government Resourcing Team.
