New Healthcare Facilities Programme: Acute Hospital engagement continues

08 March 2024

Over the coming weeks, meetings will be taking place with a number of key stakeholders as work progresses towards delivering new healthcare facilities for Jersey.

The stakeholder meetings are being held to gather feedback on the early proposals for the Acute Hospital at Overdale, which will help to inform the next stage of the building’s design.

In addition to holding sessions with colleagues from Health and Community Services, the New Healthcare Facilities team will be inviting residents of Overdale and Kensington Place to the next Neighbourhood Forum, and meetings will be held with other key stakeholders over the coming weeks.

As engagement continues, the first image of the early concept design of the Acute Hospital is being shared with Islanders to show the progress that is being made.

Following the planned engagement, the concept proposals will be subject to further refinement ahead of an Islandwide consultation in May 2024, when Islanders will be invited to give their feedback on more detailed designs of the Acute Hospital. The process will conclude with the submission of a planning application later in 2024.

Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Tom Binet, said: “Engaging with key stakeholders at this stage of the process is essential to make sure we are capturing feedback from those who are more likely to be impacted by the proposals.

“We are making very good progress with the development of the Acute Hospital, which I hope Islanders will see reflected in the concept designs we are sharing at this stage. I favour a transparent approach with Islanders, and I hope that by sharing the designs at this stage means that our community can get a good sense of the fantastic new facility that is being developed.

“I look forward to presenting the scheme to Islanders in much more detail in the coming months when we will be going out to public consultation. In the meantime, I would like to thank everyone for their understanding as we carry out the very important work of engaging with key stakeholders to ensure we are getting the concept design correct.

“If you are an interested party and you think we should be consulting with you at this stage, please do get in touch with the Programme team.”

About the Acute Hospital

The Acute Hospital at Overdale will be delivered in a single-phase build and construction is planned to start in 2025 with the completion of the Acute facility due in 2028. Earlier works will prepare the site for development.

The Acute Hospital will provide for the Island’s sickest patients; for those who require an overnight hospital stay. Most of the inpatient beds will be single rooms with ensuites.

The facility will provide a range of emergency and elective care services for Islanders, including:

  • Emergency department
  • Critical Care
  • Women’s and children’s centre (including maternity unit) • Elective and Emergency operating theatres
  • Inpatient wards.

Four project parameters for the development of the hospital have been set:

  • Retain the existing housing development to the east of Westmount Road
  • Retain the existing alignment of Westmount Road
  • Retain the existing properties within the private Hillcrest and Castle View Estates
  • Retain the Jersey Bowling Club.

The dilapidated and unused healthcare buildings towards the back of the Overdale site are currently being removed. The demolition is being managed in phases and is due to be completed towards the end of this year, which will create a clear site for the construction of the Acute Hospital in 2025.
