Statement of significance
A very fine merchants house c. 1690 with possible earlier origins, forming one of a terrace of similar properties, overlooking St Aubins harbour. The front entrances were originally on the E and are now on the W onto La Rue du Crocquet. Retains considerable original historic fabric and features both externally and internally. Important historic associations with the Dean, Francois Jeune, 1806-1886, later Bishop of Peterborough after whom this house was named.

External Description
Hotel, former merchant house. Mid terrace, 3 storeys plus attic and basement. 3 bays. Slate roof, lined C20 render in ashlar effect, rendered end stacks. Central entrance has door with 4 incised panels, upper panels glazed. Brass door knocker and knob. Side lights. Rendered Doric doorcase with panelled pilasters and flat cornice hood. Star decoration above door and C19 lamp. GFl has entrance flanked by 16 pane (8/8) sashes no horns. FFl has 3 similar windows. 2nd Fl has 3 similar 16 pane sashes (8/8)l , the central one with horns. Two C20 dormers. Rear, former front on E: lined render in ashlar effect. Most of lower GFl blocked off by later additions including flat and garages in the former front garden. Former front entrance reached by 5 granite steps. Fine 6 panelled door, 4 upper panels glazed. Good black enamelled door knocker. To r, N of door a 16 pane, (8/8) sash, painted in, no horns. To S a 4 pane, (2/2) sash with reeded central mullion, round arched head and horns. 2nd Fl has 1/1 sashes with horns. 3rd Fl has 2/2 sashes with horns and original plate glass. Joining stone on N. C19 Jersey style dormers with glazed cheeks and 2/2 sashes.
Internal Description
Central staircase, double pile plan. C17 oak dog leg stair to upper storeys, with chunky turned balusters and chamfered handrail, bun caps to newels. C18 stair from basement to first floor with mahogany handrail, turned newels and stick balusters. Most doors replaced by firedoors but two 3 panelled doors of c. 1750 with fielded panels survive in bedrooms, one with H hinges of late C17/C18 date with nails. Kitchen in basement has tall C19 c/ b doors with chamfered frame. Doorway of c. 1820s with reeded surrounds and floriate modillions. Previous front door to sea, now rear door of 6 panels, upper 4 glazed, strap hinges with expanded ens and door knocker. Structural framework of wide beams with 2" chamfers evident through all floors, including wall beams and transverse beams running E/W. Basement has remains of fireplace with granite jambs and lintel but corbels removed. Metal support post from basement to attic. FFl and 2nd Fl have c.1750s pine fireplace surrounds with cornice. GFl has C19 fireplace in Rear NE room. Very thick walls 3', with batter.
