Health and safety standards for users of display screen equipment (DSE) in the workplace are detailed in the approved code of practice (ACoP).
The ACoP is relevant to all workplaces where display screen equipment, which is defined as any alphanumeric or graphic display screen, is used.
Many workplaces, including the majority of offices, architects, travel agents and air traffic control towers, use this type of equipment.
The code details the arrangements which should be in place to ensure that users of display screen equipment are not placed at risk.
Areas covered include:
- minimum requirements for workstations
- assessment of workstations
- nature and timing of breaks
- eye and eyesight testing

Guidance is also available on the provision of eye and eyesight tests where employees have been identified as DSE 'users'.
