Hearing assessments and tests
Hearing assessments, hearing aid device programming and fitting appointments are available at both the General Hospital and the Hearing Resource Centre, located at the Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre.
If you need a hearing assessment or test, visit your GP in the first instance. They will refer you for an assessment if necessary.
We don't accept self-referrals as there may be underlying conditions that need immediate attention or a referral to a different department, such as the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) department.
Your GP can determine this at your appointment.
Hearing loss
If you experience a significant and sudden loss of hearing, consult your GP.
If the hearing loss is not due to wax build up they may refer you to an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist for further evaluation and treatment.
Hearing assessments for children and young people (8 months to 18 years)
Paediatric tests are by appointment at the General Hospital.
We have a waiting list and prioritise requests based upon clinical need.
Newborn hearing screening
Newborn hearing screening is usually performed on the Maternity Unit at the General Hospital. Babies may require a follow up appointment.
The details will be discussed with you at the appointment.
These tests are normally undertaken in the first 4 weeks of life.
Hearing aids
This service is by appointment only. We offer appointments at the General Hospital and at the Hearing Resource Centre, at Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre (previously Les Quennevais school).
We add new cases to the waiting list and prioritise requests based on need.
Private hearing aids
The Audiologists offer a private hearing aid service at the General Hospital.
This gives you a wider selection of models including:
- completely in the canal (CIC)
- in the ear (ITE)
- receiver in the canal (RIC)
- traditional behind the ear models
We only charge the cost of devices from the manufacturer plus appointment fees to cover time, equipment and room use.
An information appointment is free, though appointments for other services are charged and non-refundable. You only pay for the hearing aids if you decide to keep them, and warranty periods depend upon the manufacturer.

Outside these hours, you can leave your faulty device in our dedicated box at the reception desk. We'll post it back to you when the repair is complete.
You must leave your contact details, and a description of the problem.
There is no drop in clinic at the General Hospital and you must book an appointment to be seen.

Private hearing aid repairs are by appointment at the General Hospital.
If we can't repair the hearing aid, we can post it to the manufacturer on your behalf. Manufacturer's repair costs (if out of guarantee) are typically £75 to £100.
Lost or damaged hearing aids
Your hearing aids are expensive medical devices, on loan to you from the Government of Jersey and you are advised to look after them. There's a charge of £90 (per hearing aid) to replace a device which is lost or damaged due to negligence.
If you normally wear 2 hearing aids and lose or damage 1 of them, you will need to make an appointment to enable us to connect your existing device to your replacement device.
