Our service
We provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients with complex neurological disorders.
We work with and support adults with all neurological conditions including:
Getting a referral
Your GP refers you by letter. The consultant prioritise your referral before adding your name to the waiting list. We make appointments according to priority or in date order.
Your appointment
What to wear
In preparation for a possible examination, wear some comfortable, removable clothing.
What to bring with you to your appointment
- your appointment letter
- medications including those you are currently taking, or a recent list
- information of change of details, for example, new address, GP or contact details
When you arrive
Take your appointment letter to the reception desk. The receptionist will confirm your details and direct you to the waiting area.
During clinic
You are seen by a doctor, who specialises in Neurology or a Clinical Nurse Specialist. There may be a junior doctor or medical student present. They only observe, and we can see you without them present if you prefer.
A clinic nurse is always on hand to act as your chaperone and answer any of your queries. We ask some questions about your general health. Provide details of any existing medical conditions and of your current complaint.
Physical examination
Your nervous system is a complex network of message pathways. It may seem odd testing your reflexes in your feet if you have a headache, or looking at your eyes if your hands are
shaky. Information from simple tests can aid a diagnosis.
After your appointment
It isn’t always possible to reach a diagnosis on your first visit to clinic. It may be necessary to have tests. The nurse tells you what happens next, including waiting times.
Technicians perform the tests and can answer any questions about the procedures. The doctor discusses your results with you at your next clinic appointment. Sometimes they forward them to your family doctor.
