Working safely with woodworking machinery (ACoP)

The approved code of practice (ACoP) 'The Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery' ACoP 9, gives practical guidance on the safe use of woodworking machinery. With the exception of hand held portable machines, ACoP 9 applies to woodworking machinery used in all working environments.

For guidance on machinery, with the exception of woodworking, the approved code of practice 'Safety in the Use of Machinery' ACoP 10, is available to download on the page working safely with machinery.

The ACoP contains details of the arrangements which should be in place including:

  • provision of adequate training for operators, supervisors and managers
  • use of the appropriate equipment for the job to be done
  • laying out premises to ensure the safe use of machinery
  • effective guarding for each type of machine and safe systems of work
  • ensuring that machinery and premises are properly maintained
