This supplementary planning guidance deals with how the island's landscape and seascape character can be maintained and enhanced through the implementation of the bridging Island Plan when decisions are made about planning applications.
It should be used to assess all development proposals where they occur throughout the island and its territorial waters in areas covered by the guidance (see maps 4a and 4b), specifically to assist with the interpretation and application of bridging Island Plan Policy SP3: Placemaking, Policy PL5: Countryside, coast and marine environment, Policy GD6: Design quality, Policy GD9: Skyline, views and vistas and most significantly Policy NE3: Landscape and seascape character. It can and should also be used to inform and assess development proposals within the built-up area where they may have an impact upon landscape or seascape character.
The guidance is based on the award-winning Jersey Integrated Landscape and Seascape Character Assessment (2020) which has expanded upon and updated the Countryside character appraisal (1999).
