What to consider before studying online

There are many things you should consider before you apply for distance learning or online courses.

Check if the degree gives you the accreditation needed to work in the sector.

You’ll need a licence to practice in some areas of work such as:

• social work
• mental health nursing
• bio medical science
• many medical professions

If you want to have a career in psychology make sure your degree gives you a Graduate Membership to the British Psychological Society (BPS). You will not be able to progress to a psychology master’s degree or doctorate without this. Check with your university or look on BPS for more information.

For some jobs you’ll need to complete a certain amount of relevant work experience with supervised or assessed practice before you become qualified. To find out how this can be done speak to the course provider or local employers.

Make sure the online provider is legitimate. You can check this on HEDD the higher education verification.
