Working as a young person
You can do paid work in some places from the age of 14 but only for a certain number of hours.
If you’re aged under 16 you cannot work:
- during school hours
- before 6am or after 8.15pm
- for more than 2 hours on school days
- for more than 12 hours in a school week
- for more than 6 days per week
There are different rules outside of school term if you’re aged 14 and 15.

There’s no minimum wage for employees aged under 16. How much you get paid will depend on your employer.

Finding work
To find work you should write your CV and cover letter. If you need help you can talk to your school careers teacher or contact Skills Jersey.
For most jobs you’ll need to apply by email. You can also send your CV and cover letter by post or visit potential employers.
If you visit a potential employer you should:
- dress smart
- take a copy of your CV and cover letter
- ask to speak to the manager, introduce yourself and explain what you are looking for
- if they do not have a role for you now you can ask them to keep your CV in case one becomes available
