​​​​​Finance options for post-graduate courses

You can apply for student finance for professional qualifications you need to get to go into your profession such as PGCE and legal courses.

If you want to study full-time for a master's degree or a doctorate you can apply for the Jersey Bursary.

Professional qualifications

Application deadlines

  • You must complete your student finance application (HE1) by 31 December 2024 for courses starting 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2025.

  • You must send your Income Statement (HE2) by 31 March for the academic year your application relates to.

You can receive student finance for some 1 or 2 years postgraduate professional qualifications if they are needed to go into your profession.

These are funded the same way as undergraduate grants and include:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • Diploma in Social Work
  • Legal Practice Course (LPC)
  • Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC)

Applying for a post-graduate grant for your professional qualification is the same as applying for student finance.

Jersey Bursary

Application deadlines

  • You must apply for the bursary by ​1 May. We will not accept late applications.

If you want to study full-time for a master's degree or a doctorate you can apply for the Jersey Bursary. You can still apply at doctorate level if you have previously received funding for a masters level or not.

You can receive up to £10,000 to use for your tuition fees or maintenance.

You must complete your application and provide all documents by 1 May. However, we recommend you apply by 31 March to give us enough time to process your application.​

If you’re accepted in the bursary you’ll receive 3 payments sent directly to the student's bank account.

If your course is longer than 1 year, you’ll only receive payments after we receive a satisfactory annual report. You can upload your report using the online form below.

Upload student finance documents

To be able to apply for the Jersey bursary you must:

  • have accepted an offer from a school, firmly or provisionally
  • have achieved a minimum of an upper second-class honours degree (2:1)
  • have lived in Jersey for five years immediately on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September
  • would have been resident but you were, or are, temporarily employed outside the Island
  • your residential status is Entitled and have lived in Jersey for at least 12 months on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September

Apply for the Jersey Bursary

To apply for the bursary you need to:

  1. complete the student finance application (HE1) below as an independent student. This is so you’re registered with Student Finance as they will make your bursary payments
  2. complete the Jersey Bursary application form by 1 May. This is sent to you by Student Finance once your application is approved
  3. upload a copy of your degree certificate using the online form above. If you have not been awarded your degree you can provide a statement of your academic standing from your school

After you submitted your HE1, Student Finance will send you an email with details of what your next steps are and forms you need to complete.

A short list of applicants will be agreed by a panel before the end of May. 

If you're shortlisted, you'll be invited for an interview in July. You’ll need to give a 10 minutes presentation on your chosen topic of research or study. 

Members of the panel include:

  • the Minister of Children and Education (or their representative)
  • the Group Director of Education (or their representative)
  • a Student Finance officer
  • a senior academic advisor from the UK
  • an independent person
