Meeting your midwife
Your first midwife appointment will usually happen when you’re around 9 weeks pregnant.
You’ll receive an invitation to your appointment by letter.
If you have any health concerns or complications during early pregnancy you may see your midwife sooner.
Where to go
You’ll see your midwife either at your GP surgery or at the hospital depending on whether or not you have
maternity care with your GP and Community Midwives available in your GP surgery.
You’ll receive instructions on where to go in your invitation letter.
What to expect
You can expect the following from your first antenatal appointment:
a questionnaire about your health, your families health and your partner’s health
weight record
height record
blood pressure examination
blood tests
urine test
general questions about any concerns
a chat about your plan going forward
You'll receive your pregnancy notes which you must carry with you at all times and bring to every appointment. This will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and discuss any concerns.
